Agalakada Dharmarakshitha Purana Viharaya has been built by Agalabada Dharmarakshitha Thero with a Tampita Viharaya during the reign of king Kirthi Sri Rajasinhe (1747 – 1781). This temple lie between Akuressa and Morawaka, 5.5 km off Akuressa town and 21 km off Morawaka.
To reach Agalakada Dharmarakshitha Ancient Temple from Akuressa take to Pitabeddara road from Thibbotuwewa junction for 3.5 km and take the Thalahagama – Makandura Rd. You will come across a notice board directing towards the Agalakada Dharmarakshitha Purana Viharaya after 1 km. Turn at this board and travel for 1 km to reach the temple.
A Tampita Viharaya is a structure built on a wooden platform that rests on a number of stone stumps usually 3-4 feet tall. The roof is held by a structure built of timber and the walls are generally made of wattle and daub.
The initial Tampita Viharaya building at this temple has been destroyed and only the granite stumps can be seen today.
