Elugala Tampita Viharaya

The Banlangoda Pinnawela Elugala Rajamaja Viharaya is an ancient Tampita Temple in the Kanathiriyanwela village. Believed to be connected to King Vatta Gamini Abaya, better known as King Walagamba (103 BC – 89 BC) this temple has been seen the patronage of King Mayadunne (1521-1581), Seetawaka Rajasinhe (1581 – 1591?) and many kings of the Kandyan Kingdom. The current name of this temple is Sri Pushparama Purana Rajamaha Viharaya.

The Elugala Rajamaja Viharaya is said to have carried the Pirith Nilaya of the Bolthumbe Sumana Saman Devalaya in the past.

Tampita Viharaya at Elugala is built upon a wooden platform built upon a frame of large timber beams laid upon 16 granite stumps. Although the exterior of the structure has not seen any changes, the image house within the structure has been completely redone including the Buddha statue and the two statues of Sariyuth and Mugalan, paintings of the walls and roof destroying any historical value of the structure.

Elugala Rajamaha Viharaya can be reached from Balangoda by taking the Balangoda-Bogawanthalawa Road for 9.5 km and then taking the Minuwan Arawa Road and traveling 600 meters along this road.
